Marina Repairs Near Completion

Dock at marina after Hurricane Ophelia   Dock repairs as of Jan. 1, 2006

When hurricane Ophelia raged over us in September, it destroyed most of the docks along the Bogue Sound side of the island, while leaving ocean-side stairs to the beach surprisingly intact.

As spring approaches, most of the repair work to the marina has been completed. After extensive research into the available dock options, including concrete docks and floating docks, the Marina Committee decided to repair the docks so they will look similar to the original docks, though using upgraded materials and construction. The Board of Directors approved this recommendation, based on the fact that it was cost-effective and would allow repairs to be completed in time for the 2006 boating season. Other solutions, while having some notable benefits, were all much more expensive and ultimately provided no assurance of improved resistance to storm damage. In addition the permitting process involved in making major changes would likely have ruled out having the marina functional again for Memorial day.
